July Airport Runway Project & Travel Options to Whitefish
Whitefish sits at the crossroads of some of the most scenic routes in the Northern Rockies. Many travelers choose to fly into nearby regional airports and enjoy a memorable road trip through lakes, forests, and mountain towns on their way to The Firebrand Hotel.
Below you'll find helpful information and some options for reaching Whitefish during the runway project.
Airport Runway Project FAQ
Why is the airport closing?
Glacier Park International Airport will be completing a runway rehabilitation project designed to extend the runway’s service life and ensure continued safe, efficient air travel to the region.
When will flights be paused?
The main runway will be closed Monday at 6:00 p.m. through Friday at 10:00 a.m. on the following dates:
July 6–10
July 13–17
July 20–24
July 27–31
To accommodate weekend travel, flights will operate Friday through Monday each week. Construction crews will work around the clock during weekday closures to keep the project moving along.
What about smaller aircraft?
The airport’s secondary runway, used primarily for smaller aircraft, will remain open during most of the project. The only exception is during the July 27–31 closure period, when all runways will temporarily close.
If you’re planning travel during these weeks, we recommend checking with your airline for the latest flight schedules.
Can I still visit Whitefish during this time?
Absolutely. In addition to weekend flights into FCA, several nearby airports offer convenient access to northwest Montana, and many guests use the opportunity to turn their arrival into a scenic drive through the Northern Rockies.
What’s the closest airport during the closure?
The two most convenient alternatives are:
- Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) – about 2.5 hours from Whitefish
- Spokane International Airport (GEG) – about 4 hours from Whitefish
Both airports offer a wide range of airline routes and rental car options.
Option 1: Fly into Missoula (2.5 Hour Scenic Drive)
Flying into Missoula Montana Airport is the closest alternative and an easy drive north to Whitefish.
The route follows Flathead Lake (pictured above), the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, with sweeping views of the Mission and Swan mountain ranges. It’s an easygoing road trip with plenty of opportunities to stop for a cultural experience, lakeside coffee, or a quick swim.
Dollar Rent-A-Car in Missoula is sweetening the journey by waiving one-way drop fees for travelers this July!
Travelers who want to relax and enjoy the ride can also arrange a private transfer with The Local Transport, which offers door-to-door service between Missoula and Whitefish.
Option 2: Fly into Spokane (4 Hour Adventure Drive)
Spokane International Airport often offers a wider selection of flights.
The drive to Whitefish takes you through the lake country of northern Idaho, passing through charming mountain towns like Sandpoint, Idaho, and along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. Many travelers make a day of it, stopping for lunch, paddleboarding, or a quick stretch by the water before continuing into Montana.
